The red rock pillar formations you see in these pictures are made up of very unstable compressed sand, commonly known as sandstone.  Most sandstone is great for hiking, since it provides a stable gripping surface for traction, but this area is far from stable.  When I was hiking up some of these formations, my feet began to break away some of the rock.  I had to take great care, as some of the drop-offs were hundreds of feet down.
